Dubai: Omanis celebrated their 45th National Day on Wednesday as thousands turned out on the streets to watch fireworks and show off their decorated cars. Oman’s leader Sultan Qaboos Bin Said will also preside over a military parade at Husn Al Shoumoukh to mark the annual event. Qaboos was unable to attend last year’s celebrations as he was receiving medical treatment in Germany. Having returned earlier this year, Qaboos gave a televised speech on Sunday and spoke for three minutes during the opening of the Oman Council. He appeared in good health.

Schools, hospitals, government ministries held various national day activities as well as many in the private sector.

Students waved Omani flags and pictures of Sultan Qaboos on their way to school. The festivities were set to go into the night with Omani folklore dance performances organised.

Hotels also offered special packages and traditional cuisines for the occasion. Over 4,000 tweets about the national day were posted under the hashtag #November18.

Oman’s expatriate community also participated in the celebrations.
