Omani citizen held on charges of mugging

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) have arrested a 30-year-old Omani citizen, identified only by his initials P.P.H., for mugging a woman and her daughter in front of the Corniche in Muttrah area, according to a police press release Tuesday.

The victim, whose nationality has not been revealed, reported to the Muttrah police station that when she was walking along the Corniche with her daughter, the accused robbed her purse and sped away in a car. "The purse contained 7000 Omani riyals and some jewellery," a spokesperson for the ROP said.

A team from Criminal Investigation Department tracked down the accused within hours. "The accused confessed to committing the crime and raid on their house yielded the stolen jewellery as well the cash," the ROP spokesperson added.

The accused has been sent to prison until the prosecution department complete the investigations for a case in the court. Under the Omani Penal Code in Article (284) the accused faces a jail-term of up to 15 years for his alleged crime.
