As Oman celebrates its 40th Renaissance day on Friday, a local catering company dealing in traditional Omani food has taken on the mammoth task of preparing an Omani dish called Kabssah that he hopes will make it into the Guiness Book of World records.

Bassam Bin Abdulkarim Al Balushi, General Manager of the Maidat Al Noman Traditional Catering Services, says the massive dish should weigh around 14,000 kilogrammes.

“For us, on our 40th Renaissance Day, [the number] four is significant, so we will have everything to do with four,” explained Bassam.

Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records are due to arrive on Thursday evening in advance of the meal preparations. “The officials of Guinness Book of World Records will first weigh the ingredients and then the final cooked dish,” explained Bassam.

Once the meal has been made, the caterer hopes to feed 40,000 visitors to the Oman Exhibition Centre on Friday where a four-day Muscat Sweets and Food Exhibition is being held. “We would like to invite every resident in Muscat to turn up and make this feat memorable,” he told Gulf News on Thursday.

Bassam and his brother Abdulrehman will supervise 40 chefs as they prepare the giant serving of Kabssah which they say will measure four diameters.

“We will use 4,000 kilogrammes of chicken and 4,000 kilogrammes of rice for this traditional Omani dish,” he said, adding that 2,000 litres of oil and 500 kilogrammes of vegetables, as well as spices will also go into making the dish that has already cost the Balushi brothers 65,000 Omani riyals. “We will also send food parcels to nearby mosques, hospitals, charitable associations and to the local prison,” Bassam added.
