Muscat: An Omani citizen has become a victim of swindlers in a combination of Internet and phone scam, according to a Royal Oman police (ROP) press release on Saturday.

The unnamed citizen, who lost 40,000 Omani riyals, also believed in swindlers' story that a bundle of papers would turn into currency notes.

The victim first received a phone call informing him that he had won a prize. He was advised to transfer some money to claim the prize. After that he was called to a GCC country to receive his ‘big prize'.

"The swindlers showed the citizen a trick and told him that plain paper can be converted into currency notes if soaked in a solution that they would give him," the police spokesperson said.

The gullible Omani approached local police here in Oman when his attempt to convert paper into currency notes failed at home.

The ROP has advised all citizens and residents to ignore any calls from unknown sources. The ROP warned that it would not be possible to track the persons who make such calls from abroad.

Meanwhile, the ROP said that 1,521 cases of bounced cheques were reported in the first half of this year.
