Muscat: Oman authorities have vowed measures to tackle disruptions in power and water supply, blamed on rapid economic growth and escalating demand.
The head of the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) made the pledge to a special panel of the Majlis Al Shura (consultative council), which has been looking into consumer complaints regarding frequent power blackouts and water shortages.
Mohammad Bin Abdullah Al Mahrouqi, Chairman of the PAEW, which was created after the dissolution of the Ministry of Housing, Electricity and Water two years ago, attended the meeting on Tuesday, along with top officials of various power-distribution companies.
The Authority underlined plans to drill water wells and lease water tankers to alleviate supply shortfalls in affected areas of the sultanate. Long-term demand would be met by investments in new seawater desalination capacity with a distribution network covering the different regions of the country.
