Muscat: Oman has scored zero in the global terrorism index, according to 2017’s released results, while Afghanistan, Nigeria, Syria, Iraq and Pakistan were ranked the top five.
The Australian-based Economics and Peace Institute issues a yearly report ranking countries around the world by using various security criteria.
The index is based on data from the Global Terrorism Database, provided by the University of Maryland in the US.
Oman came 130th in the rankings with 0 points in terms of terrorism risk perception — 0 is the highest security level against terrorism threats.
It was followed by Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in the Gulf.
In 2002, Oman set up the Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) system, which cracks down on those found to be laundering money.
In 2008, Oman introduced a law stipulating that anyone involved in crimes related to terrorism and sectarianism would be jailed for a minimum of 10 years.
In 2011, it signed the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism.
Daesh was the deadliest terrorist group in 2016 killing 50 per cent more people than in 2015.
2016 was the group’s deadliest year ever with Daesh accountable for 9,132 deaths; the majority of which occurred in Iraq.
