Muscat: A new judicial body at the criminal Court in Muscat on Tuesday issued its verdict against senior officials in Al Maha Petroleum Product Marketing Company over embezzlement and helping some expatriates to smuggle diesel outside the country.
The new judicial body was formed as per a Supreme Court order, replacing the old body.
The court handed Ebrahim Al Daheri, a UAE citizen and former managing director at Al Maha, a three-year sentence, local media reported.
The court also handed Omani former marketing director Mona Al Hosni a three-year jail term.
An expatriate who was involved in the case was also given a three-year jail term, while two other accused expatriates had fled the country.
In 2015, the court had issued its verdict against Al Daheri and Al Hosni, handing five-year jail terms each.
The court also fined all accused more than six million riyals and ordered them to pay the legal expenses.
The court heard the testimony of the captain of the Al Maha oil tanker, who said he received orders from the senior officials at the company via emails to distribute diesel in the UAE.
Al Maha disclosed on December 28, 2014 that the managing director and marketing director had been summoned for questioning by the authorities.
According to a report from State Audit Control, the two officials were involved in smuggling the subsidised diesel and sold it for higher prices in 2013. More than 30 civil servants and businessmen had gone on trial in Oman in this case since 2012.
The Muscat Primary Court had convicted the former minister of commerce and industry, an undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communication and the chief executive officer of the Oman Oil company of corruption in 2014.
