Muscat: Oman is working to enacting the environmental legislation and laws and the implementation of a number of projects that will focus on the protection of man and environment from all types of pollution, according to Syed Hamoud Bin Faisal Al Busaidi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs.
In a statement issued to media on the occasion of the Oman Environment Day on Saturday, the minister stressed that the preservation of the environment is a collective responsibility.
He added that Oman's celebration of the day confirms the progress of works related to the protection of environment and the achievements made at various levels.
"The environment day reminds the importance of preserving Sultanate's environment, the maintenance of its systems and protecting its natural resources to form a strategic balance for sustainable development plans," Al Busaidi pointed out.
"We are committed to the principles endorsed by the international community to protect environment," he said, adding that Oman was ready to work with other countries and institutions concerned with environmental issues to strengthen areas of cooperation and joint action with other countries.
"We are also keen to strengthen the components of a right environmental management, establishing databases, developing environmental legislation," he reiterated.
The minister revealed that Oman was keen to intensify research and studies and projects that serve different areas of environment and development resources.
He said that the celebration was an annual event with the participation of society to express pride in the achievements of the march of environmental work in the country.
As part of the celebrations a week-long festival of environment and society opened at Youth Complex in Nizwa under the theme "Towards a sustainable environment for the development of society".
Meanwhile, the environment forum between the GCC and the European Union will be held on January 15 and 16 and will discuss two points, climate changes and recycling of wastes.
These will be the most important environment issues on the agenda of world countries with the participation of experts from the European Union and the GCC.
