Muscat: The Primary Court of Muscat on Sunday issued more jail sentences in the high-profile case known in local media as the ‘oil sector corruption case’.

The court has sentenced Adel Al Kindi, former member of the appointed State Council and the chief executive officer of the Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company, Orpic, to three years in jail and slapped him with a fine of OMR1 million (Dh954,000), and ordered his dismissal from government service for 30 years on charges of accepting a bribe and abuse of government office.

The court also sentenced Qasim Al Shizawi, the Director General of Ports at the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications to a three-year jail term and fined him OMR750,000 as well as dismissal from the service.

The public prosecution accused him of accepting a bribe of OMR200,000 from the Consolidated Contractors Company for facilitating the procedures for the award of contracts in the Duqm area in the south of the country. It also accused him of abusing his position by accepting the bribe for his own benefit in violation of the company’s policies.

Fatihi Alaadeen, the Egyptian Director General of the Consolidated Contractors Company was also sentenced to three years in jail and given a fine of OMR500,000, as well as deportation from the country after finishing the jail term for offering the bribe to the Director General of Ports at the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications.

Rizq Mustafa, an Egyptian project manager at the Consolidated Contractors Company was also sentenced to three years in jail and received a fine of OMR300,000, as well as deportation from the country after finishing his sentence.

The two accused admitted that they bribed the Director General of Ports at the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications to smooth the payment procedures for the Union Contracting Company.

The verdicts are the latest in a series of high-profile corruption cases that have been unearthed in Oman recently, most prominent among them being those in the oil sector.

In a verdict that sent shockwaves through Oman’s business community, the Court of First Instance in Muscat on Thursday sentenced the CEO of the state-owned Oman Oil Company, Ahmad Al Wahaibi, to 23 years in jail for accepting bribes, money laundering and abuse of office.

More than 20 civil servants and businessmen have gone on trial in Oman since last year.
