Muscat: The Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW), affirmed that Muscat Electricity Distribution Company is responsible for the repeated power outage in Muscat. The company is also responsible for the delay in restoring the power in those areas.
The power outage affected many areas like Sultan Qaboos University and Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, and lasted for more than thirteen hours.
The sudden power outage at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on May 7, resulted in losses especially with regard to research projects that rely on power supply.
Crops at some greenhouses were also affected and some fish perished, according to local media reports.
Some wards at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH), also remained without power, except for the emergency.
Some employees at SQU were trapped in an elevator for a while but they were rescued by personnel at the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) department.
The PAEW added that in a statement, that such incident showed the existence of significant shortcomings in the technical side of the company.
The PAEW explained that the restoring the power put the life of the company employees and workers of at risk for not taking safety rules, adding to that the technical management of the incident were weak .
Moreover, the coordination between work sites and control room lacked effectiveness.
The investigation that conducted by international experts revealed that the lack of a plan to respond to such incidents and the lack of learning from the lessons to prevent its recurrence in the future, were also among the reasons behind the repeated power outage.
The PAEW imposed direct recommendations to put operational restrictions and other rules related to safety.
