Muscat: Muscat Municipality shut down 222 shops for failing to comply with conditions of public health recently.
It also issued 1,205 notices of violations and disposed 5,308 kg of foodstuff, fruits and vegetables. That came after the municipality paid 23,213 inspection visits carried out by the inspection and control departments of the municipality.
Moreover, 943 liters of expired milk and 1,505 expired cans used for cooking were destroyed.
An official at the municipality told Gulf News that such inspection visits came after many reports by the consumers against those shops.
The official pointed out that the municipality will show zero- tolerance to any shop that violates the public health norms.
The municipality has the right to shut down any foodstuff facility if it violates public health norms, according to Article 2 of the order.
More than 500 shops have been shut down in Muscat governorate so far this year, according to the official.
More than three millions items of foodstuff, fruits and vegetables were disposed in 2014.
