Muscat: Muscat Municipality, which is widely credited with pioneering IT-enabled public services in the sultanate, has been awarded the Arab League’s e-Government Shield.

The award was presented at a ceremony organised by the League’s Arab Administrative Development Organisation, in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Saturday.

Khalid bin Dawood al Zedjali, Deputy Director General of IT Systems at Muscat Municipality, received the 'Binyawi Shield Award', which is billed as the most prestigious in the category for municipalities and governorates.

Muscat Municipality has rolled out a raft of digital services to the public, including direct e-payment involving the use of bank cards, Interactive Phone Services, and Text Messaging for payment of car parking fees, as well as ascertaining the status of applications for building permits, lease agreements, municipal permits, technical and health inspection certificates.

Adding to its growing prestige within the e-government domain in the Arab region, Muscat Municipality also won the third prize in the recent Arab Cities Organization Awards for Systems and Applications.
