Muscat: Oman is committed to international efforts aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the Ministry of Regional Municipalities, Environment and Water Resources strives hard to ensure the ecological system in the country is not damaged, said an expert yesterday.
During a lecture on global warming at Bayan College in Muscat during a lecture to mark World Earth Day (April 22), Dr Ben Emenyeonu, Information Expert at the Ministry, said: "Although some sceptics do not agree that there is a real and present danger in the current trend of climate change, there is growing concern among the international community, scientists and environmental activists about the dangers of not taking immediate action to forestall the risks of global warming."
He told the students that the theme of this year's celebration: "Global Warming: change begins with learning", was very instructive, pointing out that unless the public gained a deep understanding of the issues entailed in global warming, there would be no meaningful change towards saving the planet.
Temperature rise
The expert also spoke on how both industrial enterprises and individual activities were contributing to the build-up of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere and the likely consequences of continuous rise in the earth's temperature.
Dr Emenyeonu stressed that Oman has continued to demonstrate its commitment towards reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by becoming party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1994 and the Kyoto Protocol in 2004.
