Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has mounted a manhunt for three masked men who burgled the Rumais branch of Bank Muscat on Thursday morning, police sources told Gulf News.

The source revealed that three robbers entered the bank at 8am through the employee entrance at the rear of the building with a semi-automatic weapon.

There were no casualties but one staff member fainted.

The men stole an unspecified amount of money from the branch. The bank has yet to issue an official statement on the burglary.

A customer, who spoke to police, said the men were tall, dark-skinned and spoke English.

“Everyone at the bank was scared. They told us to get down. Thank God, no one was hurt,” the employee said.

In August 2013, six robbers burgled the Al Hayal Bank in Ibri province, about 250km northwest of Muscat.

The perpetrators managed to steal a small safe from the bank but failed to take the bigger one due to its heavy weight.

The men were later arrested by the police.

In March 2013, staff at the Bank Muscat in Fanja of Bidbid province, foiled a robbery attempt by a an Arab national.

In 2010, a masked man robbed the Bank Muscat branch in Ghala area of Bausher province in Muscat governorate and stole 48,000 riyals.

Bank Muscat is Oman’s largest lender.
