Muscat: An Indian woman, who was jailed last year for killing her alcoholic husband, is being sent back to India after being released on compassionate grounds, a media report said Thursday.

The appeals court in Oman’s Sur city last week had reduced the woman term from five-years to six months — which ended Thursday — as her daughters are minors.

The 40-year-old woman, who worked as a teacher in a school in Sur in northeastern Oman, was arrested after her 49-year-old husband’s unnatural death October 25 last year, the Times of Oman reported Thursday.

“I am not able to express my gratitude in words for the Omani judiciary, social workers and my friends who helped in my troubled time. I thank everyone who helped a lot in my release,” she said.

The woman said that she was awaiting to meet her family and two daughters back home in Pune in Maharashtra state.

The woman’s two daughters, who were sent to India after their father’s death, are with their grandmother in Pune, the report said.

The court took into consideration her current predicament and a mercy petition filed by her children and other family members.

The victim was found dead in the room when police arrived at the scene, an earlier report said.

The teacher had stabbed her husband, who was in a drunken state, following a brawl.

“The victim was an alcoholic. We helped him frequently in reaching home since he used to be excessively drunk. He landed in trouble many times after being caught for drunken driving,” a family friend was quoted as saying in an earlier report.
