Huge quantity of alcohol seized at Oman border
Police foil attempt to smuggle alcohol into Oman through Al Wajaja border post on New Year's eve
Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) have foiled an attempt to smuggle massive amount of alcohol into Oman through Al Wajaja border post on New Year's Eve, according to a press release from police on Tuesday.
"An Arab national has been arrested for driving a Volvo trailer loaded with a huge quantity of alcohol," a spokesperson for the ROP said.
He added that a pre-fabricated cabin was placed on the trailer with alcohol cleverly concealed in the walls of the cabin. "It needed extreme vigilance and careful inspection by the Customs Officers to foil the smuggling attempt," he added.
The estimated value of the 912 cartons of alcoholic drinks and 50 cartons of beer was around 35,132 Omani riyals. "This is probably the biggest catch of smuggled alcohol," the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested two young suspects for breaking charity fund boxes placed in super markets and stealing cash.
