Muscat: Medium to heavy rains lashed northern parts of Oman on Thursday and Friday, disrupting normal life and throwing traffic out of gear. Musandam, South Batinah, Dhahira and Buraimi governorates received medium to heavy rains, while North Batinah and Muscat governorates received light to moderate rains.
Wadis in the provinces of Khasab, Ibri, Rustaq, Nakhal and Awabi were flooded, causing traffic jams.
No causalities have been reported, an official at the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance told Gulf News.
Meanwhile, dramatic footage and photos emerged from Wadi Al Mahalil in Nakhal province, with citizens running to escape the oncoming flood. The footage has gone viral on social media platforms, and shows a car being swept away as a citizen tries to drive away from the wadi. He was later rescued by residents.
The residents of Wadi Al Mahalil were offering condolences at a majlis when the incident occurred.
Earlier, authorities urged residents to stay away from low-lying areas, as well as overflowing wadis.
Rainfall in 2007 due to Cyclone Gonu claimed 49 lives, which was followed by Cyclone Phet in 2010 that claimed 24 lives in the Sultanate.
