Four vehicles were involved in the accident, including three trucks and a saloon car, say police

Muscat: Four Omani citizens were killed and three critically injured after a horrific accident on Tuesday evening on the mountainous road in Dhofar, south of Oman, according to Royal Oman Police (ROP) statement on Wednesday.
"Four vehicles were involved in the accident, including three trucks and a saloon car, which was a complete wreck," according to a spokesperson for the ROP's Public Relations Department.
"A truck broke down on the downhill section of the road and another truck coming from behind rammed into it," he said, adding that the truck then veered off the road, broke through the barriers and went on the other side of the road.
Two on-coming vehicles, a truck and a saloon car ran into the truck that had jumped on the other side of the road, killing all the occupants of the saloon car. The vehicles continued to roll down the hilly road even after crashing and caught fire after hitting the mountain. Two Omanis died on the spot while two other died after being admitted to the ICU of the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah.
"Two of them burnt to death on the spot," the police spokesperson said.
The police, ambulances and Civil Defence people rushed to the spot as soon as they were intimated, but could not put off fire before the occupants were fatally burnt.
Meanwhile, the police statistics revealed that 97 people died in 749 road accidents in different parts of Oman in March 2012.
The police spokesperson lamented that hardly a day passes without a fatal traffic accident in the country. The police have urged motorists to drive carefully and ensure that vehicles' tyres, brakes and other parts are in good condition.
