Muscat: In a suspected case of vandalism, a vehicle belonging to a senior army officer was set on fire on Monday at his residence in Sohar, police sources said.

According to sources Brigadier Ali Bin Abdullah Al Kalbani, who heads the Moral Guidance and Public Relations Department of the Sultan's Armed Forces, was at home when the incident occurred but his family was away in Muscat.

No injuries were reported in the incident as the car had been parked outside.

However, the vehicle and the shed it was parked in were completely gutted in what is believed to be an isolated act of arson.

"Only the car parking area was damaged in the fire," said a source at the police department.

Police are investigating the case but no arrests have been made. Arsonists had torched government vehicles and a police station when the protests first broke out in Sohar on February 26.

Although the needle of suspicion points towards arsonists following the targeting of properties and vehicles in Ibri earlier, no clear linkage has been established between the fire at the house of the defence official and recent protests.
