Muscat: Seeb Criminal Court issued its verdict on Tuesday in 25-drug related cases and cases involving resisting the police.

The court sentenced those involved in drug cases to one year in jail and fined them 500 rials (Dh4,770.)

The court also sentenced those involved in resisting the police to three months in jail.

Official sources at the Public Prosecution said that six of the accused had resisted the police when asked to take some drug-related tests.

One of the accused was an engineer at a leading oil company in Oman.

Six people were arrested last week on drug dealing charges in Oman.

Meanwhile, the Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Drug Law will be amended soon after the final approval of Oman’s Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed.

The amended law aims to severely crack down on drug dealers.

Article 56 of the new amended law says anyone who assaults a drug enforcement officer could face up to ten years in prison and will be fined up to 3,000 rials. A life sentence could be implemented if the assault permanently disables the officer and a death sentence can be issued if the officer is killed.
