Muscat: Speed is believed to be the biggest scourge on Omani roads, and the Public Prosecution has has vowed to show no leniency to repeat offenders.

Currently, 21 suspects are being tried for various types of violation of the traffic law. The suspects include some young drivers who were driving at a very high speed - ranging between 190 and 273km per hour - on the newly-built Muscat Expressway, which is yet not equipped with fixed speed radars.

Attorney General Hussain Bin Ali Al Hilali said in a statement to media that the Public Prosecution will apply all penalties quoted in the Traffic Law against drivers, who do not respect speed limits.

He noted that offending drivers are being held and interrogated pending trial and their vehicles seized.

The Public Prosecution Department published the number plates of vehicles whose drivers were recently reported to be travelling at speeds of 199 to 273 km/hour on Muscat Expressway where the speed limit is 120 km/hour.

Meanwhile, the Appeal Court in Nizwa gave a sentence of one year imprisonment  to the driver of a vehicle who travelled at high speed placing public safety at risk.

The court also ordered the man to pay 19,000 riyals in fines, which will be borne by the insurance company concerned as per the rules.

In a similar verdict, the Appeal Court gave a 15-day jail term to drivers found skidding their cars on the roads. The errant drivers were also fined 100 riyals each.

The drivers, who initially acquitted by Al Khabourah Primary Court, but the Public Prosecution officer appealed to Sohar Appeal Court, who awarded the sentence.
