Muscat: Despite repeated warnings from the authorities, six Omani nationals have been killed after two days of heavy rain in the country caused by a tropical depression in the Arabian Sea.

Floodwater in Wadi Ghul in Hamra province swept away a car with a family of five inside.

The father was rescued, but the bodies of the man’s wife and the couple’s three daughters were later found by the Public Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulance personnel.

The father is in a stable condition at Nizwa Hospital.

Meanwhile, a child trapped in his family’s vehicle was swept away by floodwater in the Wadi Souq area of Rustaq province.

The child was found dead along with another man also swept away in the floods in the same area.

At least 10 vehicles parked near Nizwa Souq in Wadi Wasit were swept away.

The rain caused huge traffic snarls and also flooded low altitude areas in the provinces of Rustaq and Hamra on Thursday.

On Friday, hail and thunderstorms pounded some northern provinces, according to residents.

Flooding continued in the wadis of Yanqul, Rustaq, Awabi, Nakhal, Bahla, Ibri, Samayil, Mahda and Hamra provinces.

Meanwhile, the General Authority for Civil Aviation said they expected the rain to continue for two more days in the north.
