Muscat: The presence of Army in Sohar was scaled down Saturday following the return of peace on Friday thanks to the tight security and cooperation accorded by citizens in the industrial port town, according to a report by government-owned news agency ONA.

Quoting an official source at the Ministry of Defence, the statement said that with the return of calm and normalcy to Sohar, thanks to the combined sectors of the state and the cooperation of citizens, the military and security forces have started gradual withdrawal.

The source told ONA that the number of checkpoints set up by the Army on Friday have also been scaled down in the city 230-km north to Muscat.

The statement reiterated that the Army and security apparatus would continue to be on duty in Sohar and urged citizens to cooperate.
