Muscat: “While Arabs have the right to uphold the Palestinian issue and occupied Jerusalem, with their right being evident for all young and adult, they still need to reconcile with themselves,” Yousuf Bin Alawi Bin Abdullah, Oman’s Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs, said while leading the Sultanate’s delegation that took part in emergency Arab foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo. The meeting on early Sunday followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement declaring occupied Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He added that the embassies of the countries accredited to the State of Palestine should be located in occupied East Jerusalem, as proposed in the meeting.
While he appreciated all input and enthusiastic speeches at the meeting, which boost morale and foster a future vision, he said they fell short of people’s expectations from the Arab League.
“It is not good to express our feelings, denounce others’ acts and still do nothing. If we want to be obeyed, we should reconcile with the world,” he added.
He pointed out that the ad hoc committee held a three-hour meeting but came out with nothing as it does not have a clear vision.
He also pointed out that US Vice-President Mike Pence will visit the region soon, and Arabs and Palestinians have the tools that may enable to change the situation, “if we want really to help our Palestinian brothers”.
“There are some proposals which may be positive, including developing and implementing a road map for our work in the coming year.”
At the end of their summit, Arab foreign ministers called on the US to reverse its decision. They also urged different countries to recognise the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.
