Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) coast guards have foiled an attempt by 50 people trying to enter the country illegally in two separate swoops in northern Oman.

“The coast guard got information about 23 infiltrators gathered at a spot after getting off a boat,” a spokesman for ROP’s Public Relations Department said, adding that the coast guards surrounded the infiltrators in Sohar and later arrested all of them.

The coast guards also arrested 27 Asian nationals from Ghaleel area in Suwaiq town.

The police have urged citizens and residents to help counter the threat posed by illegal residents.

Meanwhile, the coast guard responded to a commercial ship’s distress call off Quriyat town to the east of Muscat. “The crew was provided technical assistance,” the spokesman added.

The coast guard also rescued three fishermen in the Dhofar region when their boat ran aground while another fisherman was provided assistance in Khasab area after the safety of his boat was compromised.
