Muscat: Sulaiman, a three-year-old Jordanian boy, who was rescued from the burning vehicle in Oman last August, was discharged from Khoulah hospital in the capital, Muscat, on Saturday, his 33-year-old father, Mohammad Sulaiman, told Gulf News on Sunday.

“He is in a stable health condition. I just want to thank the medics at the hospital for the big efforts they exerted to save him,” he said.

Sulaiman has undergone medical treatment and skin grafting for a month in both Sur and Khoulah hospitals since the incident.

Doctors at Khoulah hospital successfully conducted skin grafting for his sister, Ghazl, four, last week.

“Doctors told me that Ghazl will gain conscious soon as she [is showing] some signs of improvement,” said Sulaiman.

Sulaiman and Ghazl were trapped in their father’s car, which caught fire at a petrol station in Sur province after the father stepped out of the vehicle to buy some things from a nearby shop.

Dramatic videos of the incident showed bystanders rushing to pull the children out of the burning vehicle, leading to an outpouring of sympathy from Omanis as the footage spread on social media.

Sulaiman suffered 30 per cent burns while Ghazl had 70 per cent burns.

Mohammad had earlier said that he left a lighter in the front seat and that his children were playing with it, which might have sparked the fire.

After the tragic incident, the children’s father gave an emotional interview to Gulf News. He said he would never forgive himself for what happened.

“I have been crying day and night for what I did. It was my mistake. I will not forgive myself if they die,” he said while speaking over the phone from Sur province.

Omanis have launched a campaign on social media to raise money for the children’s medical bills.
