Muscat: There were 1,781 road accidents in Oman from January to April this year resulting in 207 deaths and 999 injuries, according to statistics issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information.

There were 1,959 accidents in the sultanate in the corresponding period last year showing a drop of 9.1 per cent this year. The fatalities also decreased by 28.1 per cent and the injury cases dropped by 64.7 per cent.

The number of accidents recorded in April stood at 506.

The number of fatalities this year dropped by 28.1 per cent when compared to the death of 288 people last year in the corresponding period.

This year 143 Omanis — 117 males and 26 females — died in accidents.

The deaths during the same period among expatriates touched 64 cases, including 57 males and 7 females. As many as 999 people suffered injuries from road accidents this year which shows a decline of 64.7 per cent compared to 2,832 injuries recorded during the same period of 2014.
