Muscat: Fifteen people died in Oman this week due to road accidents, according to a press release from Royal Oman Police (ROP) Saturday.
The ROP Public Realtions department reported that the country witnessed 145 traffic accidents in different parts of Oman. The majority of the accidents (80) were crashes between two vehicles while in 34 incidences, vehicles crashed against stationary objects.
In 14 other accidents, pedestrians were run over by vehicles as 182 persons received minor to major injuries.
The police are conducting a traffic safety symposium and are planning to involve celebrities like international Omani sportspersons to carry out a campaign for safe driving.
“Most of accidents are result of rash driving and also drivers indulging in talking on mobile phones,” said Captain Rashid Al Abry, spokesperson for the ROP. He added that the drivers cannot pay full attention on the roads if they indulge in messaging or talking on mobile phones while driving.
“We urge people to refrain from use of mobile phones while driving,” he urged.
