Kuwait City: Mariam Al Jawaan will this week attempt to become the first Kuwaiti woman to set foot in Antarctica.

She will represent the Kuwait Science Club Forum (KSCF) on the team of 90 scientists, researchers and students from around the world taking part in the scientific mission in Antarctica on February 14-28, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) said.

"The mission will set sail from Argentina on Wednesday," she said.

Mariam will be doing a research on the role of Antarctica in the Earth system with a special emphasis on the Southern Ocean because of its importance to global climate, Kuna said.

"During my journey, I will have the opportunity to study climate change and its developments through a direct field experience," Mariam told KUNA. "I'm proud to be representing Kuwait as the first Kuwaiti female to set foot in Antarctica," she said.

She said she hopes to be able to put up the national flag in Antarctica on February 25 -26 to coincide with Kuwait's National Day.
