Manama: People who fail to respect the Kuwaiti flag will be sent to prison for up to three years under a proposal submitted by a Kuwaiti lawmaker.

MP Nabeel Al Fadhel said that he wanted to amend a 1960 law and introduce stiffer penalties for those who disrespect the flag or the national anthem.

"A prison sentence between one and three years and a KD1,000 ($3,590) fine should be imposed on those who fail, verbally or physically, to show veneration to the flag or the national anthem or who encourage others to disrespect them," the lawmaker said, quoted by Arabic daily Al Rai on Monday.

The 1960 law does not stipulate legal action for disrespecting the national anthem.
