Manama: Kuwait's education ministry will start installing surveillance cameras in the country's government schools within the next few days, a senior official has said.
"Ministry personnel have already created detailed floorplans of the schools showing where the CCTV cameras are to be placed," Badr Al Furaih, the assistant undersecretary for educational development said. "The plans will be issued to the company responsible for installing the cameras," he said, quoted by Kuwait Times daily.
The move to install cameras aims to ensure higher levels of discipline and satisfactory behaviour among students. Several physical altercations between students have been reported in the Kuwaiti media.
The ministry is also studying the possibility of paying the school fees of Bidoon (stateless Arab residents) kindergarten pupils from its charity fund, a ministry official said.
The ministry currently provides funding for Bidoon students at private elementary, middle and high schools.
Fahad Al Ghais, the assistant undersecretary of private education, told Kuwaiti media that Bidoon students will be required to provide birth certificates on registering at schools starting next academic year after the government began issuing official documents to its stateless residents.
