Manama Kuwaiti police have arrested an expatriate for blackmailing a young woman after he retrieved private pictures she had deleted from her iphone and threatened to post them on the Web if she did not give him 500 Kuwaiti dinars ($1,800).

Local Arabic daily Al Rai reported that the woman had deleted all pictures and private information from the smart phone and sold it to a shop in Hawalli.

However, she later received a call informing her that there were private pictures on the phone and that she could take them back if she agreed to pay him 500 dinars.

She immediately agreed, but informed the police who traced the number and were able to arrest the blackmailer, the daily said.

Recovered deleted pictures and data

Initial investigations revealed that he worked in a phone shop and that he used his skills to recover deleted pictures and data.

However, the suspect denied that he blackmailed the woman and insisted that he wanted to inform her about the existence of the pictures, but added that he needed some money, as a loan, to help him out of a dire financial situation.
