Manama: The nomination for the best Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) woman award is now open, Laila Al Sabaan, President of the Gulf Woman and Family Association (WAFA), said.

The award is given to women who made outstanding contributions as mothers, wives, leading societal figures and community volunteers, Al Sabaan told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

Four criteria related to children, husband, society and country are used to decide the winners, the head of WAFA, a grassroots organisation of the Arabian Gulf States (AGS), said.

The winner should demonstrate interest in educating her children to make them socially outstanding and support her husband to help him succeed. She should also demonstrate loyalty to her country by holding an advanced position in the public or private sector and commitment to her community through volunteer work.

"These four criteria together stress that a Gulf woman can fully assume and successfully balance her commitments to her home, husband, country and society," Narmeen Al Hooty, the head of the cultural committee, said.

The organisation will receive the nominations of the GCC women who fulfill the required conditions and applications can be by the women personally or by other parties, including women societies, state agencies or non-governmental organizations, Al Sabaan said. Applications will be received until September 1.

The award was given to Fayza Al Khorafi in 2008 and Suad Al Rifaii in 2010, both from Kuwait. It was withheld in 2009.
