Manama: A metal object was extracted from a 20-year-old patient in a hospital in Kuwait in an extraordinary surgery believed to be the first of its kind in the world.
A specialised medical team conducted the surgery at Al Jahra Hospital and the metal object was extracted successfully from the patient’s body through a one-centimetre wide opening, Kidney and Urology Consultant Surgeon Dr Hassan Al Mutairi told Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) on Sunday.
One year ago, the patient was admitted to the general surgery department as he suffered severe abdominal pain after he swallowed, by mistake, a metal object.
After a series of tests and x-rays, the patient was discharged and instructed to continue treatment at the outpatient clinics. However, he did not follow up on the treatment, Dr Al Mutairi said.
Recently, the patient, suffering pain in his right side kidney and blood in his urine, was admitted to the department of urology at Al Jahra Hospital.
X-rays and medical tests detected the presence of a metal body in the right side kidney in a very rare case of a metal object moving from the digestive tract to the urinary tract.
The surgery was carried out for the first time in Kuwait and it will be soon published in international urology specialised magazines as the first surgery to extract a metal body similar to extracting kidney stones, Dr Al Mutairi said.
The urology department in Al Jahra Hospital is considered among the most developed in the treatment of kidney stones, he added.
