Manama: A Kuwaiti man got the shock of his life when he discovered that the woman whom he had taken for a wife had been legally married to another man all along.
The stunned husband who had reportedly offered his wife, a Gulf national, 100,000 Kuwaiti dinars (Dh1.30 million) when they got married was aware that the woman he was about to wed had been married before they met and that her first marriage had ended in divorce.
However, the man, a Shaikh from the ruling family, said he was not aware that the woman got married again in Bahrain in 2001 with a Kuwaiti citizen who reportedly held a high position after her first marriage was annulled, Kuwaiti Arabic daily Al Rai reported on Monday.
The woman’s second husband too apparently offered her 100,000 dinars as a marriage gift and the two are still legally married.
The third husband alleged his wife was a bigamist after she filed for divorce and asked for alimony for the children they had from their relationship. He accused the woman of forging official documents by declaring that she was single when they were about to get married and denying any legal encumberances to their marriage.
According to the husband, the woman explained that her first marriage had ended in divorce but never mentioned that she had married a second man.
The court is scheduled to look into the case by the end of the month.
