Manama: A Kuwaiti national working for privately owned charter airline LotusAir has claimed that he been held "hostage" in the Cairo offices of his employer.
Adnan Al Falah said that dozens of LotusAir employees, along with their relatives and friends, have been "besieging" the offices, where he works in an administrative role, holding him hostage and threatening to keep him there until staff are paid their overdue salaries.
The employees gathered outside the offices apparently believe that the suspension of flights by the airline could mean that the company is going into liquidation and does not intend to give them their backdated pay, Kuwait Times reports on Tuesday.
The Kuwaiti national said that he was looking forward to a peaceful resolution of the dispute and that he preferred to wait until the situation in Egypt stabilized and the start of an official dialogue with the interim Egyptian government that will secure his release.
Al Falah said that he has contacted the Kuwaiti embassy in Cairo and the Egyptian embassy in Kuwait with no apparent results and that LotusAir on February 16 filed a case to report the hostage situation.
According to the report, Al Falah rejected accusations that he had hired thugs to intimidate the protesting employees outside the company offices.
