Manama: Kuwait's Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies (UCCS) has decreased the prices of 100 imported cooperative commodities by 20 percent for three months.
The price reduction, between July 3 and October 3, aims to help citizens and expatriates with their expenses during Ramadan, the Muslims' scared month, a UCCS official said.
Hussein Al Duwaihis, UCCS Chairman, said that the decision was a ‘gift' to citizens and expatriates on Ramadan and that the list includes foodstuff and consuming commodities.
"The UCCS and the Prices Control Committee urge cooperative societies to standardize prices and to provide essential commodities at reasonable prices during Ramadan," he said.
"At the same time, consumers should refrain from buying large quantities of commodities as all goods will be available at reasonable prices during the holy month," he said.
During the holy month, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and indulging in sensual pleasures from sunrise until sunset. However, several families tend to overspend on foodstuff to celebrate the break of the fast and to entertain guests in the evening, resulting in elaborate food preparations.
Religious leaders have regularly warned against the waste of food, but their calls have often been unheeded.
