Mohammad Al Afassi

Manama: Kuwait’s former social affairs and labour minister has died after a long battle with illness, local media reported on Monday.

A self-made man, Mohammad Al Afassi started his career as a soldier in the military corps and then started elementary school very late. However, he continued his studies and graduated from the college of law in Kuwait. He then went on for postgraduate degrees in politics from New York University and in law from the University of Florida.

His doctorate in international law was from Wales in 2003.

He was chief of military justice from the late 1980s until he became a government minister in 2009.

He was president of the Military Court after the liberation of Kuwait in 1991.

Al Afassi was also the head of the cabinet legal committee in 2011.

He represented the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at the International Labour Organisation in Geneva in 2010.
