Manama: Sara Al Idris, the Kuwaiti blogger summoned over an insulting tweet, has been granted bail by the public prosecution after paying KD1,000 (Dh12,074).

Last week, Kuwait’s public prosecution called in Sara over tweets deemed offensive to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Sara who was abroad when the prosecution summoned her surrendered herself to the police upon her arrival at the airport on Tuesday, reports in Kuwait City said. She was accompanied by her mother and her lawyer.

In her tweet, Sara criticised the Prophet’s marriage to Safiya. In response, she was attacked by religious scholars and citizens online for insulting the Prophet.

Sara justified her tweet by saying she was quoting a book, which included sayings of the Prophet. Scholars refuted her arguments as baseless and she subsequently deleted her tweet and apologised.

However, a lawyer in Kuwait filed a case against her, prompting the legal authorities to take action.

Sara was previously sentenced to jail for posting tweets over comments deemed offensive to the Emir, but she was later pardoned.
