Manama: Kuwait's interior ministry said that eight people died from overdose in January.

The victims are six Kuwaitis and two foreigners, according to the report published in the local press.

"Efforts should be harnessed to support the efforts being exerted by the Narcotics Prevention Department to end drug use in the country," the ministry said. "Drugs are detrimental to the society, particularly among the youth."

According to non-official figures, an average of 15 new drug addiction cases are reported each month in the country.

Kuwait has been remarkably open about addressing the drug use among its youth and has promoted public awareness through education campaigns.
