Manama: A Ministry of Interior officer in Kuwait was sent to jail for 20 days after he was pictured smoking a shisha in a public café wearing his uniform.

The picture, taken secretly, showed the man smoking the shisha and surfing or chatting on his mobile phone in the café in the Farawniya area.

As the picture went viral on social media, it reached interior ministry inspectors who decided to penalise the serviceman for failing to abide by the rules that forbid ministry personnel to sit in cafés and public places wearing their uniform, Kuwaiti daily Al Rai reported on Sunday.

Inspectors headed to the café, detained the serviceman and took him to a police station where they questioned him.

Having established his identity, they contacted the Assistant Undersecretary for Public Security Affairs Ebrahim Al Tarrah who ordered the 20-day sentence.

He is to serve the term in a military prison, the daily added.
