Manama: Most of the 384 people who died in traffic accidents last year in Kuwait were young people, the head of a safety committee said.
"We express deep regret that Kuwait has been witnessing an increasing number of fatalities annually as a result of traffic related accidents," Badr Al Matar, the chairman of the Kuwait Society for Traffic Safety, said. "Last year, we lost 384 people, mostly young."
This year's national campaign for traffic safety will focus on young men and women with the aim of reducing the levels of traffic accidents to the minimum and save lives, he said.
Al Matar called on the international community to boost campaigns to highlight traffic issues and propose strategies, Al Watan Daily reports on Thursday.
"Countries should exchange expertise and statistical data, and should also outline ideal solutions for the gravest issue facing humanity. More than 1.2 million people lose their lives on roads annually, while more than 50 million others get injured, mostly at a young age," he said.
