Manama: Kuwait's parliament on Wednesday approved a law on the grant offered by the country's Emir to Kuwaiti citizens as the country celebrates national day.
Shaikh Sabah Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah last week ordered the distribution of around $4 billion and free food for 14 months to citizens born before February 2011.
Each of the 1.1 million citizens will receive KD1,000 on February 24, Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) said.
"According to the parliament's explanatory note on the law, the first article states that a grant of KD 1000 will be given one time only to every Kuwaiti citizen born before February 1, 2011 and that no part of the sum is to be withheld or deducted for any reason," Kuna reported.
The second article states that subsidized staple goods will be distributed to Kuwaiti and others holding a ration card, free of charge starting from February 1, 2001, and ending in March 2012.
The third article stipulates that the amount required for the grant and the staple goods is to be taken from the state general reserves, Kuna said.
Foreigners living in Kuwait are not covered by the grant. However, a lawmaker urged the private sector to offer a one month salary to expatriates as a token of appreciation as the country celebrates its national day, liberation day and the fifth anniversary of the Emir's accession to power.
