Manama: Around four million traffic violations were recorded in Kuwait in 2010, traffic officers have said.

"The total number of traffic violations recorded for the year 2010 was 3,995,451, up from 3,289,904 in 2009," Saleh Al Najem, assistant general manager of traffic research and planning, said.

Most of the offences were booked for speeding and traffic officials said that the higher figure indicates the interior ministry's commitment to reducing accidents.

Kuwaiti officials have been pushing for the amelioration of a worrisome traffic record that often makes roads unsafe and repeatedly urge the media to help promote awareness campaigns.

"The Traffic Department is determined to implement a law against newly-qualified drivers who commit two major traffic offences during the first year," Al Najem said, quoted by Kuwait Times.

Action could include withdrawing the driving license and undergoing a new driving test.

Fines for the unauthorised use of parking lots for the disabled could range between KD 100 ($360) and KD 500 ($1,800).
