Manama: Kuwait has presented a plan to protect marine sailing routes, fight piracy and combat armed assaults.

"The Kuwaiti work plan proposed various means to confront possible hazards in the water of the Arabian Gulf," Lt Commander Shaikh Mubarak Ali Yusuf Al Sabah, head of marine operations of the Kuwaiti Coast Guard, said.

The plan was presented to the Third International Symposium for Marine Disaster Management, held in the coastal city of Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) reported.

The delegation representing the Kuwaiti fire department presented a work paper about the sand storm that struck Kuwait earlier this year, resulting in five people missing. The delegation briefed the conference about operations for rescuing up to 180 people during the storm.

The seminar, which addressed maritime security and safety, brought together a number of experts from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the US, Italy, Britain, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, India, Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Malaysia, Finland, Iran and New Zealand.
