Manama: Kuwait’s court of appeals on Sunday postponed the trial of the alleged pro-Iran espionage ring to January, Kuwaiti online media reported.
The criminal court on March 29 sentenced two Iranians and a Kuwaiti national to death and a Syrian and a stateless Arab to life in prison.
The court in Kuwait City acquitted the only woman, the daughter of one of the men on the death row, and another Iranian suspect. The defendants were charged with spying for Iran and of passing on information on the Kuwaiti and US military in Kuwait to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Tehran denied the charges and said there was nothing to spy on in Kuwait. Iran last week arrested two Kuwaiti nationals, initially saying that they were involved in spying activities. Tehran later said that they abused their tourism visas.
Kuwait insisted that the two men, a lawyer and a cameraman, were innocent and that they were on an assignment for a private TV station that was cleared by the Iranian authorities. Around 45,000 Iranians live in Kuwait.
