Manama: A policeman lost three days' pay for failing to salute a female officer at Kuwait International Airport.

The female officer noticed that the policeman did not salute her on several occasions, in violation of the hierarchy rules.

She also found out that his non-compliance with the rules was deliberate, so she reported the matter to her superior, local dailies Al Rai and Arab Times reported.

The policeman was quizzed on the issue and was made to sign a pledge that he would abide by the rules and salute officers regardless of their gender.

Women in Kuwait have made great strides in most areas, but they face formidable challenges from conservative forces.

In the February elections, none of the women candidates could win a seat in the 50-member parliament, even though the outgoing parliamentary formation included four women.
