Manama: Kuwait's parliament speaker Jassem Al Khurafi has suspended a scheduled debate for 15 minutes to give time to the people present at the weekly session to leave the building. The session will resume with the behind-doors grilling of Prime Minister Shaikh Nasser Al Mohammad.

Kuwait’s prime minister for the first time has agreed on Tuesday to be questioned by the parliament.

The Prime Minister, Shaikh Nasser Al Mohammad Al Sabah, the nephew of the Emir, will be probed in parliament beginning today.

Faisal Al Meslem, an Islamist MP, filed a request after parliament reconvened to question the premiere over alleged financial irregularities calling into question a specific cheque issued to a member of parliament.

Al Meslem accused Al Sabah of misleading MPs and the public over accusations of misuse of government funds.

Three other ministers are scheduled to be quizzed by lawmakers on alleged financial and administrative irregularities.

The quizzing of the prime minister, a first in the country with the oldest parliament in the region, has divided lawmakers and the nation over its merit.

However, Shaikh Nasser has repeatedly said that he was ready for the questioning and that he had nothing to hide.

Reacting to a question by a local daily about whether he and the other ministers were ready to be grilled, Shaikh Nasser answered in Arabic, English, French and Italian or Spanish: "Naam, Yes, Oui, Si".
