Manama: A Kuwaiti lawmaker on Wednesday said he would propose naming a major avenue after Prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz, the former Saudi crown prince and interior minister who died on Saturday.

“The naming will be in appreciation of his stance for Kuwait’s rights,” MP Musallam Al Barrak said. “The deceased stood by Kuwait during its most critical times and only sick people would deny his position,” he said.

The death of the Saudi crown prince has sparked high emotions in Kuwait where several people and media heaped praise on his role in maintaining stability and security in the region and lauded his role in supporting the country when it was invaded by the Iraqi former regime. Prince Nayef was buried in Makkah on Sunday.

Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud was named the new crown prince on Monday.

He is the eighth crown prince since Saudi Arabia was established as a kingdom.

The first crown prince was Saud Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud who was appointed on May 11, 1933.

Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz was Saudi Arabia’s second crown prince in 1953 and Khalid Bin Abdul Aziz became the third crown prince in the country’s history in 1965.

Fahad Bin Abdul Aziz was named crown prince on March 25, 1975. The current king, Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, was appointed the country’s fifth crown prince on June 13, 1982.

Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz was named crown prince on August 1, 2005 and Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz became the seventh crown prince on October 22, 2011.
