Manama: Kuwait’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday annulled the parliament membership of Marzouq Al Khalifa after it decided that he was not among the 10 winners of the Fourth Constituency in the elections held on November 26.

The court said that Faraj Al Arbid, a candidate in the elections, came tenth and was therefore declared as the elected member of the parliament.

Several candidates had challenged the results of the elections in the five electoral districts and took their cases to the court.

In January, the Constitutional Court gave challengers two weeks to look at the reports from the Ministry of the Interior on the 2016 parliamentary elections, including the minutes and the counts received from the parliament.

In February, the court decided to postpone all cases until May 3 to issue its final verdict

In its ruling, the court said it was rejecting all cases, except the one filed by Al Arbid to contest the results in the Fourth Constituency.

The court said that there was a mistake in the ranking and the candidate who was ranked 11th in the results should have been ranked 10th, a position that includes him in the list of the 10 winners with the highest scores.

The Kuwaiti parliament is comprised of 50 elected lawmakers. In the current parliament, only one woman, Safa Al Hashem, was able to secure a seat.
